Google TV has been available in the US for a while now, and it looks like the service is about to launch in the UK, according to a recent report by the Telegraph.
Google’s Eric Schmidt is expected to announce the launch of Google TV when he gives his year’s MacTaggart lecture at the Edinburgh Television Festival, and the service is expected to be available in the UK within six months.
There are no details as yet on whether we will see similar hardware for the Google TV that is available in the US, from companies like Logitech and Sony or whether Google will have new hardware partners here in the UK.
What is Google TV?
Google TV is a smart TV platform from Google co-developed by Intel, Sony, and Logitech. It integrates the Android operating system and the Google Chrome web browser to create an interactive television overlay on top of existing internet television and WebTV sites to add a 10-foot user interface, for a smart TV experience. The platform was first announced in May 2010 and launched in October 2010 with official devices from Sony and Logitech.
The service allows users to access a variety of content, including streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube, as well as traditional TV channels. It also supports a wide range of apps available from the Google Play Store, making it a versatile addition to any home entertainment setup.
Potential Impact on the UK Market
The introduction of Google TV to the UK market could significantly impact the way people consume media. With the increasing popularity of streaming services, Google TV offers a unified platform that combines traditional TV viewing with internet-based content. This could be particularly appealing to younger audiences who are more accustomed to on-demand viewing.
Moreover, the integration of Google Assistant allows for voice-controlled navigation, making it easier for users to find and manage their content. This feature could set Google TV apart from other smart TV platforms available in the UK, such as Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV.
There are also questions about how Google TV will integrate with existing UK services like BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, and All 4. If Google can successfully partner with these local content providers, it could make Google TV an even more compelling option for UK consumers.
As soon as we get some more information on the UK launch of Google TV we will let you guys know.
