Facebook has finally unveiled their new messaging service, called Facebook Messagages, and as we thought Facebook will be offering users their own @facebook.com email address.
The Facebook Messages service is a lot more than just email, it is designed to give you all your messages in one place, through SMS, chat, messages and email.
Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg described Facebook Messages as a ‘social inbox’, one place for you to access all your messages. The service will be rolled out to Facebook’s 500 million users in stages.
Today I’m excited to announce the next evolution of Messages. You decide how you want to talk to your friends: via SMS, chat, email or Messages. They will receive your message through whatever medium or device is convenient for them, and you can both have a conversation in real time. You shouldn’t have to remember who prefers IM over email or worry about which technology to use. Simply choose their name and type a message.
It will be interesting to see how popular Facebook Messages will become, the fact that it features built in email with your own @facebook.com emaila address means it is capable of taking on Google’s Gmail, although Zuckerberg described the new service as ‘much more than email’.
