CEO of Crytek Cevat Yerli has confirmed that we can expect a Crysis 2 Editor and a free CryEngine 3 SDK this summer, with the SDK expected to arrive in August.
The new CryEngine 3 SDK development kit will allow anyone to download it for free once released and use it to develop anything they like using the engine code and actual game sample code from Crysis 2.
The download will be a complete version of the new CryEngine 3, including C++ code access, content exporters, including LiveCreate real-time pipeline, shader code, game sample code from Crysis 2, script samples, new improved Flowgraph and a whole host of great asset examples, which will allow teams to build complete games from scratch for PC.
Features of CryEngine 3 SDK
CryEngine 3 is renowned for its cutting-edge graphics and powerful development tools. The SDK will include a variety of features that make it a versatile tool for game developers. One of the standout features is the LiveCreate real-time pipeline, which allows developers to make changes on the fly and see the results immediately. This can significantly speed up the development process and make it easier to iterate on game designs.
Another key feature is the improved Flowgraph, which is a visual scripting system that allows developers to create complex game logic without writing a single line of code. This makes it accessible for designers and artists who may not have a programming background. The inclusion of shader code and script samples will also provide a solid foundation for developers to build upon, whether they are creating a new game from scratch or modifying existing assets.
Impact on the Game Development Community
The release of the CryEngine 3 SDK for free is a significant move by Crytek and is expected to have a substantial impact on the game development community. By providing access to such a powerful engine at no cost, Crytek is lowering the barrier to entry for aspiring game developers. This democratization of game development tools can lead to a surge in creativity and innovation, as more people will have the opportunity to experiment with high-quality tools.
Moreover, the inclusion of game sample code from Crysis 2 is particularly noteworthy. Crysis 2 is known for its impressive graphics and complex gameplay mechanics, and having access to its code can provide invaluable insights for developers. They can study how certain features were implemented and use that knowledge to enhance their own projects.
The CryEngine 3 SDK is not just for hobbyists and indie developers; it also has the potential to be a valuable resource for educational institutions. Schools and universities that offer game development courses can use the SDK as a teaching tool, providing students with hands-on experience with a professional-grade engine. This can better prepare students for careers in the game industry, giving them a competitive edge.
The upcoming release of the Crysis 2 Editor and the free CryEngine 3 SDK is an exciting development for the game development community. With its comprehensive set of features and the inclusion of game sample code from Crysis 2, the SDK promises to be a powerful tool for developers of all skill levels. Whether you are an aspiring game developer, a seasoned professional, or an educator, the CryEngine 3 SDK offers a wealth of opportunities to create, learn, and innovate.
