If you’re as old as me, then you probably remember the Sinclair ZX81 from 1981. This iconic piece of computing history has been given a new lease on life by a clever modder who has transformed its case into a fully functional ZX81 PC.
The ZX81 measures 6.6 inches wide x 1.6 inches tall x 6.9 inches deep, which is pretty small to fit a whole PC inside. Despite its compact size, the modder, known as Unravelled, managed to squeeze in all the necessary components to create a fully operational PC.
Components and Challenges
Unravelled used a tiny hard drive and a VIA EPIA Pico-ITX motherboard to make this cool PC mod. The VIA EPIA Pico-ITX motherboard is known for its small form factor, measuring just 3.9 inches by 2.8 inches, making it an ideal choice for this project. This motherboard includes integrated graphics and a low-power processor, which are crucial for fitting into the limited space of the ZX81 case.
The challenge of fitting all the components into such a small case cannot be overstated. The ZX81’s original design was never intended to house modern PC components, so Unravelled had to be incredibly meticulous in planning the layout. The power supply, cooling solutions, and storage all had to be carefully considered to ensure everything fit without overheating or causing other issues.
Dual Operating Systems
Instead of making just one PC, Unravelled decided to make two versions: one running Linux and the other running Windows. This decision showcases the versatility of the mod and allows users to choose their preferred operating system. The Linux version is likely optimized for lightweight distributions, which are well-suited for the modest hardware capabilities of the Pico-ITX motherboard. On the other hand, the Windows version provides a more familiar environment for users who prefer Microsoft’s operating system.
The dual operating system setup also highlights the potential for using the ZX81 PC for various applications. For instance, the Linux version could be used for programming, web browsing, and other lightweight tasks, while the Windows version could handle more resource-intensive applications, albeit within the constraints of the hardware.
This project is a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the modding community. By repurposing the ZX81 case, Unravelled has not only paid homage to a classic piece of computing history but also demonstrated the potential for modern technology to breathe new life into vintage hardware. The project has garnered attention and admiration from tech enthusiasts and retro computing fans alike.
