We have featured many mini PC systems here on Geeky Gadgets over the years, but this fantastic Commodore HX-64 retro handheld concept is a fantastic idea from Cem Tezcan. As you can see from the images above and below, the retro concept offers a handheld computer complete with a variety of connection ports, controller buttons, cassette reader, and keyboard.
“Handheld Retro PC – Commodore HX-64 – As a part of my monthly product design practice, I decided to make a handheld Commodore 64 that uses ‘mini cassettes’ to load programs or games. I was inspired by most of the old Commodore electronic products to create this dream device.”
Design and Features
The Commodore HX-64 retro handheld concept is a nostalgic nod to the classic Commodore 64, one of the most popular home computers of the 1980s. The design incorporates a full QWERTY keyboard, which is essential for typing commands and programming, reminiscent of the original Commodore 64. The inclusion of a mini cassette reader is particularly intriguing, as it harks back to the days when software was loaded from cassette tapes, adding an authentic retro touch.
The device also features a variety of connection ports, allowing users to connect external devices such as joysticks, additional storage, or even a monitor. This versatility makes the HX-64 not just a handheld gaming device but a fully functional mini PC. The controller buttons are ergonomically placed, ensuring that gaming sessions are comfortable and enjoyable.
Potential Applications
The Commodore HX-64 retro handheld concept could serve multiple purposes. For retro gaming enthusiasts, it offers a portable way to enjoy classic games from the Commodore 64 era. Imagine playing “The Great Giana Sisters” or “Impossible Mission” on the go, with the same tactile feel of the original hardware.
For hobbyists and programmers, the HX-64 could be a valuable tool for learning and experimenting with BASIC programming. The original Commodore 64 was renowned for its role in the early days of home computing education, and this handheld version could inspire a new generation of coders.
Moreover, the device could be used in educational settings to teach students about the history of computing and the evolution of technology. The hands-on experience of loading programs from mini cassettes and typing commands on a physical keyboard could provide a unique and engaging learning experience.
