We have featured many of Colin Furze’s crazy inventions on Geeky Gadgets, although I think his latest invention must be his craziest to date: a homemade hoverbike.
His homemade hoverbike doesn’t have any steering and there are no brakes, although it does actually fly. Have a look at the video below.
What a plumber can do in a shed, eh? Considering the amount of time I’ve spent on this and the fact this is my first EVER attempt at making anything that leaves the ground, this is well and truly a job well done. It’s easy to overlook the true scale of what it takes to make something like this work at all.
The Engineering Behind the Hoverbike
Creating a hoverbike from scratch is no small feat. Colin Furze, a self-taught engineer and inventor, has managed to build a functioning hoverbike using parts that are readily available. The hoverbike is powered by two large propellers, which generate enough lift to get the bike off the ground. However, the lack of steering and brakes makes it a challenging vehicle to control.
The hoverbike’s frame is constructed from lightweight materials to ensure that it can achieve lift. The propellers are driven by powerful motors, which are controlled by a simple throttle mechanism. Despite its rudimentary design, the hoverbike is a testament to Colin’s ingenuity and determination.
Challenges and Future Improvements
One of the biggest challenges in building a hoverbike is achieving stability. Without a sophisticated control system, the hoverbike can be difficult to maneuver. Colin’s current design lacks the ability to steer or brake, which limits its practicality. However, these limitations also highlight the potential for future improvements.
In future iterations, Colin could incorporate gyroscopic stabilization to improve the hoverbike’s balance. Adding a steering mechanism would also make the hoverbike more controllable. Additionally, integrating a braking system would enhance safety, making the hoverbike more viable for everyday use.
Colin’s hoverbike is a remarkable achievement, especially considering that it is his first attempt at building a flying machine. His success demonstrates the potential for DIY enthusiasts to create innovative solutions using readily available materials and a bit of creativity.
