A young boy suffering with Duchenne syndrome a muscle wasting illness was ineligible to be placed on the heart transplant waiting list.
Last week under went a 10 hour operation to install a electrically activated hydraulic pump ‘heart’ that is entirely located inside the boys thorax to reduce the risk of infection.
The heart is powered by a battery attached to his belt and connected to the device through a plug behind the ear and can be charged overnight as you would a mobile phone.
The successful operation is hoped will provide another 20-25 years of life for the boy that he wouldn’t have had without this operation.
Following the surgery the young unnamed boy is said to be well and talking.
