The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has today announced two new brand extensions to its globally recognised logo in an effort to create consumer awareness around compatibility for new devices implementing Bluetooth version 4.0.
The new designations of “Smart Ready” and “Smart” have been created to inform consumers of a given device’s capabilities, and make it easier for them to manage devices. As shown in the diagram below, Bluetooth Smart Ready devices are fully backward-compatible with older Bluetooth devices as well as other “Smart Ready” devices, while Bluetooth Smart devices can only connect to Bluetooth Smart Ready devices.
SIG explain:
“Consumers can look at new Bluetooth Smart Ready devices the same way they would a 3D ready TV – having the TV is just the first part of the puzzle, you need glasses and content in order to really experience 3D,” – “Once consumers have a Bluetooth Smart Ready device, like the new iPhone 4S, they can continue connecting to existing Bluetooth devices and are also ready to experience the new world of Bluetooth Smart peripheral devices that will carry the Bluetooth Smart logo.”
Understanding Bluetooth Smart Ready and Smart Devices
Bluetooth Smart Ready devices are designed to be the hub of connectivity. These devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and computers, can connect to both classic Bluetooth devices and the newer Bluetooth Smart devices. This dual compatibility ensures that users can continue to use their existing Bluetooth devices while also taking advantage of the new features offered by Bluetooth Smart technology. For example, a Bluetooth Smart Ready smartphone can connect to a Bluetooth headset (classic Bluetooth) and a fitness tracker (Bluetooth Smart) simultaneously.
On the other hand, Bluetooth Smart devices are typically sensors or accessories that are designed to perform specific tasks with low energy consumption. These devices include heart rate monitors, smartwatches, and other wearable technology. They are optimized for applications that require long battery life and can only connect to Bluetooth Smart Ready devices. This specialization allows them to operate efficiently without draining their batteries quickly.
The Impact on Consumers and the Market
The introduction of these new designations is expected to have a significant impact on both consumers and the market. For consumers, the clear labeling of devices as either Bluetooth Smart Ready or Bluetooth Smart simplifies the purchasing process. They can easily identify which devices will work together, reducing confusion and ensuring compatibility. This is particularly important as the number of Bluetooth-enabled devices continues to grow.
For manufacturers, the new branding provides an opportunity to market their products more effectively. By clearly indicating the capabilities of their devices, they can attract consumers who are looking for specific features. For example, a fitness enthusiast might be more inclined to purchase a Bluetooth Smart Ready smartphone if they know it will seamlessly connect with their Bluetooth Smart fitness tracker.
Moreover, the new branding aligns with the broader trend towards the Internet of Things (IoT), where a wide range of devices are interconnected and communicate with each other. Bluetooth Smart technology is well-suited for IoT applications due to its low energy consumption and ability to connect a variety of sensors and devices. As the IoT market continues to expand, the demand for Bluetooth Smart and Smart Ready devices is likely to increase.
