Apple has announced that its macOS Sierra software will now be automatically downloaded to compatible Macs.
This will happen for all Macs which have the auto update downloads enabled and that are compatible with the update.
Automatic Download, Not Installation
The update will not be installed automatically; instead, it will be downloaded in the background, ready to be installed when you want to update. This approach ensures that users have the latest software readily available without forcing an immediate installation, giving them the flexibility to choose the most convenient time for the update.
If you don’t want to update to the latest version of macOS, then you will need to turn off the auto update downloads feature. If the update has already downloaded to your Mac, then it can be easily deleted. This can be done by navigating to the system preferences and managing the storage settings to remove the downloaded update file.
New Features in macOS Sierra
Apple’s macOS Sierra comes with a wide range of new features. This is the first version of Apple’s desktop software that has their voice-activated assistant Siri built in, and it works pretty well on the Mac. Siri on macOS Sierra allows users to perform a variety of tasks using voice commands, such as searching for files, sending messages, and setting reminders, making the user experience more seamless and hands-free.
Another significant feature is the introduction of Universal Clipboard, which allows users to copy content from one Apple device and paste it onto another. For example, you can copy a text snippet from your iPhone and paste it directly into a document on your Mac. This feature enhances productivity by creating a more integrated ecosystem across Apple devices.
macOS Sierra also introduces optimized storage, which helps users free up space on their Mac by storing rarely used files in the cloud. This feature analyzes your storage and moves old files, photos, and videos to iCloud, ensuring that your Mac has more available space for new content.
Additionally, macOS Sierra includes improvements to the Photos app, such as the new Memories feature, which automatically creates curated collections of your photos and videos. The app uses advanced machine learning to recognize faces, objects, and scenes, making it easier to organize and find your photos.
The update also brings enhancements to Apple Pay, allowing users to make secure online purchases using their Mac. With macOS Sierra, you can use Apple Pay on websites that support the service, providing a convenient and secure way to shop online.
For those who use multiple Apple devices, the Auto Unlock feature is a game-changer. This feature allows you to unlock your Mac automatically when you are wearing an authenticated Apple Watch, eliminating the need to type in your password.
Lastly, macOS Sierra includes various performance improvements and bug fixes, ensuring a smoother and more stable user experience.
