We heard a rumor a while back that Apple was working on its own mapping service in a hope to rival Google’s, Google Maps, which many people were expecting Apple to release with iOS 5.
Now it looks like Apple will continue to use Google Maps for iOS, as according to a recent report, Apple has yet to finish its own mapping software, although it seems we may see some enhancements to the maps in iOS 5.
Now, sources have told 9to5Google that although Apple is working to improve the iOS Maps application, iOS 5 will not bring an Apple developed maps service and Google Maps is still in. Besides Apple’s purchase of both Placebase and Poly9, some speculated that Apple is building their own maps service to either compete with Google or step away from their input into iOS.
Apple’s Strategic Acquisitions
Apple’s acquisition of Placebase in 2009 and Poly9 in 2010 fueled speculation that the tech giant was gearing up to launch its own mapping service. Placebase was known for its customizable mapping software, while Poly9 specialized in web-based mapping solutions. These acquisitions indicated Apple’s intent to develop a robust mapping platform that could potentially rival Google Maps. However, creating a comprehensive mapping service from scratch is no small feat. It involves not only developing the software but also gathering and continuously updating vast amounts of geographical data.
Enhancements in iOS 5
While Apple may not be ready to launch its own mapping service with iOS 5, users can still expect some enhancements to the existing Maps application. These improvements could include better integration with other iOS features, more detailed map data, and possibly new functionalities like enhanced turn-by-turn navigation or improved location-based services. Apple has always been known for its attention to detail and user experience, so any enhancements to the Maps app are likely to be well-received by users.
We are looking forward to see what new features come in iOS 5, and we are expecting some major changes over the current version, although now it looks like mapping won’t be one of them.
