Last week we heard a rumor that Amazon were working on the Kindle Fire 2, which is reported to feature a 7 inch display like the existing version, and now we have a rumor of a 10 inch version in the works.
We heard last year that Amazon were considering a larger Kindle Fire tablet, and now according to a recent report by Digitimes, Amazon has placed an order with their supplier Foxconn, for a new 10 inch Kindle Fire tablet.
Of course this has yet to be confirmed by Amazon, and we don’t as yet have any specifications on the rumored device, we wonder if it will come with a range of higher end specifications than the existing model.
Potential Specifications and Features
The existing Kindle Fire has been praised for its affordability and functionality, but a 10 inch version could potentially offer a lot more. For instance, it might feature a higher resolution display, possibly Full HD or even higher, to compete with other tablets in the market. Additionally, it could come with a more powerful processor, increased RAM, and more storage options. The current Kindle Fire runs on a modified version of Android, and it would be interesting to see if Amazon continues with this approach or opts for a different operating system.
Another area where the 10 inch Kindle Fire could excel is in battery life. Larger devices often have the advantage of accommodating bigger batteries, which could mean longer usage times. Enhanced audio capabilities, better cameras, and additional connectivity options like USB-C or HDMI ports could also be part of the package.
Market Positioning and Pricing
It isn’t clear as yet whether Amazon would attempt to keep the price of a 10 inch version as low as possible, like the existing versions or whether it will be priced more in line with that of the Apple iPad. Given Amazon’s strategy with the original Kindle Fire, which was to offer a budget-friendly alternative to more expensive tablets, we suspect the device will be priced as low as possible. This approach has worked well for Amazon in the past, allowing them to capture a significant share of the tablet market.
However, a 10 inch tablet could also be seen as a premium offering, potentially justifying a higher price point. If Amazon decides to go this route, they would need to ensure that the device offers enough features and performance to compete with other high-end tablets like the iPad or Samsung’s Galaxy Tab series. This could include offering different models with varying specifications to cater to different segments of the market.
Another factor to consider is Amazon’s ecosystem. The Kindle Fire is not just a tablet; it’s a gateway to Amazon’s vast array of services, including Prime Video, Kindle eBooks, and the Amazon Appstore. A larger, more powerful Kindle Fire could enhance the user experience for these services, making it an even more attractive option for consumers who are already invested in Amazon’s ecosystem.
