With Blizzard’s once mighty MMO now shedding subscribers at an accelerated rate, there’s never been a better impetus for further extension of the brand. Legendary Entertainment and Blizzard seem to agree, as they will be forging forward with the ailing World of Warcraft movie despite the loss of director Sam Raimi by bringing in writer Charles Leavitt of The Seventh Son fame.
“They’re very excited about having a World of Warcraft film. They’ve been very careful and thoughtful about the development process,” Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said. If World of Warcraft machinima output and Blizzard’s own cutscenes are anything to go by, the property is a great fit for narrative cinematic ambitions. The film is tentatively slated for 2014.
