Volvo Trucks has developed a new system that it capable of scanning its surroundings, the system then takes into account people moving around it such as pedestrians, cyclists and more.
The video below shows how this new system works, it can even predict what people around it will be doing in the next few seconds and then alert the driver.
“Today’s Volvo trucks are designed to eliminate any vehicle blind spots. But in situations with heavy traffic it is easy for a driver to miss something important such as an approaching cyclist on the vehicle’s passenger side. Now we can solve this issue and help the driver see and understand everything that is happening around the vehicle”, says Carl Johan Almqvist, Volvo Trucks’ Traffic and Product Safety Director.
Market introduction can take place within five to ten years according to Carl Johan Almqvist.
“We have the main components in place but we need to do a lot more testing in order to make sure that the system is fault-free. If we manage to solve these challenges, a future without truck accidents is within reach.”
It certainly looks like a very interesting system from the video, and according to Volvo Trucks, we could see systems like this in use within the next five to ten years.
