Seventh Sector based in the UK, has created a new HAT for the awesome Raspberry Pi mini PC called the SerialPi5 that adds 5 x RS232 COM ports to the single board PC.
Once fitted to your Raspberry Pi the new expansion board allows you to connect five serial devices to your Raspberry Pi computer with ease. Its creator explains a little more.
SerialPi5! brings you 5 serial ports on a Raspberry Pi! The idea for this project came about after we worked on several Pi projects requiring a lot of serial comms. Single serial adapters didn’t always work, were power hungry, has messy wires, often required a USB hub – not cool!
The idea for SerialPi5 was born! No running out of on-board USB ports, no messy/bulky wires, no USB hub, We’ve packed it all on one board and created something perfect for intensive communication tasks. It works with all versions of the Pi – notice the cutout for the video connector of the early Pi’s!
Our solution is based on the Future Technologies USB Serial core to create 4 new fully featured RS232 serial ports with the usual DB9 connectors. We also connect the on-board serial port up – giving 5 serial ports in total! The PCB is mounted with 10 way headers, and we supply header to DB-9 connectors. Sadly connecting to the USB bus isn’t glamorous and we make a little wire adapter that plugs into the USB socket. We’ve made a request to the Pi foundation for future versions of the Pi to give access to the USB bus!
