The Pebble smartwatch was originally to be equipped with Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity, but now its creators Pebble Technology have revealed that the Pebble smartwatch will also support Bluetooth 4.0, via a software update that will be rolled out once the Pebble watch has been manufactured.
Enhanced Connectivity and Power Efficiency
Even after the software upgrade, the Pebble watch will still remain backwards compatible with Bluetooth 2.1. However, the upgrade to Bluetooth 4.0 will bring added benefits to all users. One of the most significant advantages is the future support for wireless sensors, which can open up a myriad of possibilities for health and fitness tracking, home automation, and more. Additionally, Bluetooth 4.0 requires less power to function, enabling your smartphone batteries to last a little longer once connected to your Pebble smartwatch. This is particularly beneficial for users who rely heavily on their smart devices throughout the day.
Pebble Technology explains:
“Please note that we’ve been planning this addition to Pebble for a while. We made sure that the Bluetooth module that we’re using had a ‘drop-in’ upgrade option to BT 4.0. We’ve already placed a large order for the 4.0-enabled module, and it will have no effect on our timeline (hint: that’s what Update 9 was 1/2 about!).”
Kickstarter Success and Future Prospects
With just 9 days left of its Kickstarter campaign, the Pebble smartwatch is edging closer to passing a massive $10 million in funding. This overwhelming support from backers highlights the strong demand and excitement for innovative wearable technology. The Pebble smartwatch’s success on Kickstarter not only demonstrates the potential market for smartwatches but also sets a precedent for future crowdfunding campaigns in the tech industry.
The Pebble smartwatch’s ability to integrate seamlessly with both iPhone and Android devices makes it a versatile choice for a wide range of users. Its e-paper display ensures readability in various lighting conditions, and the customizable watch faces and apps add a layer of personalization that appeals to tech enthusiasts and casual users alike.
As the wearable technology market continues to grow, the Pebble smartwatch’s early adoption of Bluetooth 4.0 positions it well for future advancements. The potential for integrating with other smart devices and sensors means that the Pebble could become a central hub in a user’s personal tech ecosystem. For instance, fitness enthusiasts could pair their Pebble with heart rate monitors and other health sensors to track their workouts more effectively. Similarly, smart home aficionados could use their Pebble to control various connected devices around their home.
