Today, Palm has finally moved its new webOS 2.0 SDK into a beta version that includes some very interesting features such as advanced multi-tasking, universal search, Synergy, and innovative HTML 5 enhancements.
Advanced Multi-Tasking and Card Stacks
The new features of the Palm webOS 2.0 include grouping related “cards” (or apps) in stacks, reducing clutter on your screen and making it easier to move quickly between tasks and applications. This advanced multi-tasking capability allows users to manage multiple applications seamlessly, enhancing productivity and user experience. For instance, you can group all your social media apps in one stack and all your productivity tools in another, making it easier to switch between different types of tasks without losing focus.
Just Type Quick Actions and HTML 5 Enhancements
Together with Just Type Quick Actions, webOS 2.0 allows you to create messages, update your status, or search without having to open any apps. This feature is particularly useful for users who need to perform quick tasks on the go. For example, if you need to send a quick email or update your social media status, you can do so directly from the home screen without navigating through multiple menus.
HTML 5 also plays a large part in the new OS, including Enhanced Canvas support, support for Web Storage both local and session storage, geolocation support, and application caches. Enhanced Canvas support allows for more complex and interactive graphics, making web applications more engaging. Web Storage enables web applications to store data locally on the user’s device, improving performance and offline capabilities. Geolocation support allows applications to provide location-based services, such as maps and local search results. Application caches enable web applications to run offline by storing necessary files on the device.
Additionally, webOS 2.0 introduces several other enhancements aimed at improving the overall user experience. For instance, the new universal search feature allows users to search for content across their device and the web simultaneously. This feature is particularly useful for users who need to find information quickly, whether it’s a contact, an email, or a web page.
Synergy is another innovative feature of webOS 2.0. It allows users to integrate information from various sources, such as email accounts, social media profiles, and calendars, into a single, unified view. This makes it easier to manage and access information from different sources without having to switch between multiple apps. For example, you can view all your upcoming events from different calendars in one place, making it easier to plan your day.
All in all, the new Palm webOS 2.0 looks as though it could well be a very rounded operating system, but it is still early days to say whether it’s going to be a serious contender to Apple and Google OS’s. The advanced multi-tasking, Just Type Quick Actions, and HTML 5 enhancements make it a promising platform for both users and developers. However, its success will ultimately depend on how well it is received by the market and how quickly Palm can address any issues that arise during the beta testing phase.
