We previously heard a rumor that Nokia smartphones would be launching in 2016, the news apparently came from Nokia’s China president who recently commented that the company would get back into the smartphone business in 2016.
At the moment, Nokia are not allowed to release any Nokia smartphones until the fourth quarter of 2015, this is after the sale of their mobile phone business to Microsoft.
Nokia has now released a statement that they have no plans to get back into the smartphone business, you can see the statement below.
Nokia notes recent news reports claiming the company communicated an intention to manufacture consumer handsets out of a R&D facility in China. These reports are false, and include comments incorrectly attributed to a Nokia Networks executive.
Nokia reiterates it currently has no plans to manufacture or sell consumer handsets.
So there we have it, Nokia has no plans to get into the smartphone market at the moment, we suspect this may change next year when the company is allowed to start making handsets again.
