We knew that Microsoft [MSFT] Kinect would be available some time in November here in the UK, and now a UK retailer has listed the Microsoft Kinect with a launch date of the 19th of November 2010.
The Microsoft Kinect will retail for £129.99 here in the UK, although there are already a number of online retailers offering pre-order discounts.
What is Microsoft Kinect?
Microsoft Kinect is an innovative motion-sensing input device by Microsoft for the Xbox 360 video game console and Windows PCs. Based around a webcam-style add-on peripheral, it enables users to control and interact with their console/computer without the need for a game controller, through a natural user interface using gestures and spoken commands. Kinect was first introduced to the public in June 2009 at E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) under the code name “Project Natal.”
Features and Capabilities
The Kinect sensor is a horizontal bar connected to a small base with a motorized pivot and is designed to be positioned lengthwise above or below the video display. The device features an RGB camera, depth sensor, and multi-array microphone running proprietary software, which provides full-body 3D motion capture, facial recognition, and voice recognition capabilities.
One of the most exciting aspects of Kinect is its ability to track up to six people, including two active players, and it can perform skeletal tracking of 20 joints per player. This allows for a highly interactive and immersive gaming experience. For example, in the game “Kinect Sports,” players can engage in virtual sports activities such as soccer, bowling, and track and field events, using their body movements to control the game.
Additionally, Kinect’s voice recognition feature allows users to navigate the Xbox dashboard, control media playback, and even search for content using voice commands. This hands-free interaction is particularly beneficial for users with limited mobility or those who prefer a more intuitive way to interact with their devices.
We still don’t have any pricing or release date for Microsoft Kinect and Xbox 360 bundles. As soon as we get more details, we will let you guys know.
Impact on Gaming and Beyond
The introduction of Kinect has had a significant impact on the gaming industry, pushing the boundaries of how players interact with games. It has opened up new possibilities for game developers to create more engaging and physically active gaming experiences. Games like “Dance Central” and “Your Shape: Fitness Evolved” have leveraged Kinect’s motion-sensing capabilities to offer unique and immersive gameplay that encourages physical activity and fitness.
Beyond gaming, Kinect’s technology has found applications in various fields, including healthcare, education, and robotics. For instance, in healthcare, Kinect has been used for physical therapy and rehabilitation, allowing patients to perform exercises and receive real-time feedback on their movements. In education, Kinect has been utilized to create interactive learning experiences, making subjects like math and science more engaging for students.
Moreover, the developer community has embraced Kinect, creating a wide range of applications and hacks that extend its functionality beyond its original purpose. From controlling robots to creating interactive art installations, the possibilities are endless.
The launch of Microsoft Kinect on the 19th of November 2010 in the UK marks a significant milestone in the evolution of interactive entertainment and technology. With its advanced motion-sensing and voice recognition capabilities, Kinect has the potential to revolutionize not only gaming but also various other industries. We look forward to seeing how this innovative device will continue to shape the future of technology.
