Despite what any given sixteen year old boy might think, there is apparently a person alive who not only wouldn’t kill for the chance to work on the next entry in the Halo franchise, but has already done so and found that it’s not exactly what it’s cracked up to be.
“I had a great run at Microsoft,” Payton told Kotaku. “I don’t regret one day of it. But after a few years, there came a point where I wasn’t creatively excited about the project anymore.”
“The Halo I wanted to build was fundamentally different and I don’t think I had built enough credibility to see such a crazy endeavor through,” he added. Payton goes to detail a bout of severe depression as well as a shifting creative compass as his main reasons for leaving. He plans to, what else, form his own studio called Camouflaj and is already working on two new games.
