Google X is a division at Google that works on a number of different projects, many of those projects will end up being scraped, and now the head of Google X, Astro Teller has revealed that Google considered building a Jetpack.
According to Teller, Google will scrap around 100 of their projects each year, the company decides to kill projects early on, and the division aims for projects to fail early on rather than when they have been developed with considerable investment.
Teller recently revealed that one of Google X’s early ideas was to build a Jetpack that was safe, the reason they killed the device was because it was very power inefficient and also very loud like a motorcycle.
“Wouldn’t it be awesome if we had a jetpack that wasn’t a death trap?”
“The problem is that it is going to be so power inefficient. I just couldn’t live with that…it would be as loud as a motorcycle.”
Google Glass started life as a Google X project, and the company has a number of other projects in the works, although they have yet to reveal any details on which one they intend to launch as a real product.
