The Nexus One was Google’s first attempt at making hardware, and their first smartphone. Now, Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt has confirmed that Google won’t be making a Nexus Two.
Eric Schmidt said in a recent interview with the Telegraph that they don’t intend to make a Nexus Two or any other Google branded hardware running their Android OS.
‘The idea a year and a half ago was to do the Nexus One to try to move the phone platform hardware business forward. It clearly did. It was so successful, we didn’t have to do a second one. We would view that as positive but people criticised us heavily for that. I called up the board and said: ‘Ok, it worked. Congratulations – we’re stopping’. We like that flexibility, we think that flexibility is characteristic of nimbleness at our scale.’
The Impact of the Nexus One
The Nexus One was a significant milestone in the smartphone industry. Released in January 2010, it was designed to showcase the capabilities of the Android operating system and set a benchmark for other manufacturers. The device featured a 3.7-inch AMOLED display, a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, and a 5-megapixel camera, which were impressive specifications at the time. The Nexus One also introduced features like voice-to-text and live wallpapers, which were innovative for its era.
The Nexus One’s success demonstrated that Google could influence the hardware market and push other manufacturers to improve their devices. It also helped to establish Android as a major player in the mobile operating system market, competing directly with Apple’s iOS. The Nexus One’s influence can still be seen today in the design and functionality of modern Android smartphones.
Google’s Future in Hardware
While Eric Schmidt’s comments suggest that Google won’t be making a Nexus Two, it doesn’t mean that Google is stepping away from hardware entirely. In fact, Google has continued to release hardware products under different branding. For example, the Pixel line of smartphones, which began with the Pixel and Pixel XL in 2016, has been well-received and continues to be a significant part of Google’s hardware strategy. The Pixel phones are known for their excellent cameras, pure Android experience, and timely software updates.
In addition to smartphones, Google has ventured into other hardware categories. The company has released a range of products, including the Google Home smart speakers, Google Nest smart home devices, and the Chromecast streaming devices. These products have helped Google to establish a presence in the smart home market and compete with other tech giants like Amazon and Apple.
So I guess we won’t be seeing any Chrome Google branded netbooks and tablets from them either in the near future, although who knows with Google they could quite easily change their mind and decide to produce more Google branded hardware in the future.
