Mother, or Earthbound as it’s known in the US is a JRPG series with one of the most loyal and hardcore communities a game has ever assembled. As a result, it came as no surprise that when Nintendo failed to bring the latest game in the series, Mother 3 to any other territory apart from its native Japan that fans took it upon themselves to release an unauthorized English translation. That translation is now being offered for free, with the intention of giving Nintendo a nudge in the right direction now that the original Earthbound is coming to Virtual Console.
“I realize that localizing a game this size can cost a lot, so if it’ll help in even the slightest, I’ll gladly offer to let Nintendo use my text translation files for any use at all, completely for free,” according to translator Clyde Mandelin. “I’ll even edit the files to fit whatever new standards are necessary (content, formatting, memory size, etc.), completely for free. I’ll even retranslate everything from scratch if need be. Just whatever it takes to get an official release out.”
