Datawind, the guys who brought us the Pocket Surfer, has just launched a netbook, the Datawind Ubisurfer Netbook.
The specifications on the Datawind Ubisurfer Netbook aren’t too impressive, with a 1GB SSD, 128 MB of RAM, a 7 inch screen with an 800 x 480 resolution, a built-in microphone and speakers plus an SD card slot and 3 USB ports.
Free Internet Access
What is interesting about the Datawind Ubisurfer Netbook is that it comes with free Internet access, for £159.99 about $260. This feature sets it apart from many other budget netbooks on the market. Basically, you get a total of 30 hours of free Internet access for a 12-month period. After that, you can add another 12 months of Internet access for £29.99, which is about $50.
On top of that, you can choose an unlimited Internet plan for an additional £5.00 per month. This is a very economical option for users who need constant connectivity. Additionally, it has reasonable roaming charges if you use it in Europe, costing just 5p per minute. This makes it a viable option for travelers who need to stay connected without incurring exorbitant costs.
Usability and Practicality
While the specifications aren’t top-of-the-line, the Datawind Ubisurfer Netbook is designed for basic tasks such as web browsing, email, and light document editing. The 1GB SSD and 128 MB of RAM are sufficient for these activities, although they may struggle with more demanding applications. The 7-inch screen with an 800 x 480 resolution is adequate for viewing web pages and documents, but it may not be ideal for media consumption or graphic-intensive tasks.
The built-in microphone and speakers are useful for video calls and online meetings, making it a practical choice for remote work or staying in touch with family and friends. The inclusion of an SD card slot and 3 USB ports adds to its versatility, allowing users to expand storage and connect various peripherals.
It is a shame the specifications aren’t better, as I would have bought one of these for traveling. It costs me a small fortune while using my mobile broadband abroad. However, the free and affordable Internet plans make it a compelling option for budget-conscious users who prioritize connectivity over performance.
The Datawind Ubisurfer Netbook is available now from Datawind.
