In full, it’s actually Box of Extraordinary Gentlemen..And Ladies. A motley collection of characters from across the rich panorama of history. On the picture below, you have from left to right a well-dressed gentleman who may or may not be Oscar Wilde, Moses and his Commandments, Black Beard, Alexander the Great, Beethoven, plus a coupla other blokes we couldn’t name. Oh yes, the ladies. Anne Oakley and Anne Bonnie are present too.
The ten action figures are from Archie McPhee, perhaps the most irreverent toymaker on the planet. According to the product page, these action figures would mix well with their counterparts from GI Joe and Star Wars. They can also have ‘intelligent’ conversations with each other, but this falls to the imagination of the user.
Historical Significance and Cultural Impact
These action figures are not just toys; they are miniature representations of some of the most influential figures in history. For instance, Moses, known for leading the Israelites out of Egypt and receiving the Ten Commandments, stands as a symbol of leadership and faith. Alexander the Great, one of history’s greatest military minds, represents conquest and strategy. Beethoven, a towering figure in classical music, symbolizes artistic genius and the triumph over adversity, given his struggles with hearing loss.
The inclusion of Anne Oakley and Anne Bonnie adds a layer of gender diversity to the collection. Anne Oakley, a sharpshooter and exhibition shooter, broke gender norms in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Anne Bonnie, a notorious pirate, challenges traditional gender roles and adds an element of rebellious spirit to the collection.
Expanding the Roster
If it were up to us though, we’d expand the roster and throw in Buddha, Thomas Edison, and Steven Spielberg. Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, would add a spiritual and philosophical dimension to the collection. Thomas Edison, with his numerous inventions, would represent innovation and the spirit of scientific inquiry. Steven Spielberg, a modern-day storyteller, would bring a touch of contemporary culture and creativity.
Maybe Barbara Streisand as well. Streisand, an iconic singer, actress, and filmmaker, would add a touch of glamour and artistic versatility. Her inclusion would also highlight the contributions of women in the arts, making the collection more balanced and representative of different fields.
Anyway, a box of these can be ordered at the Archie McPhee site. We’re sure Alan Moore, whose League of Extraordinary Gentlemen no doubt inspired these toys, would approve—or totally not give a flying farthing.
