Irrational Games, the developer of the highly anticipated BioShock sequel, BioShock Infinite, has just announced that their new game will be launching on October 16th, 2012, in North America. The BioShock Infinite sequel will be launching internationally on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on October 19, 2012, and is now available to pre-order.
The new BioShock Infinite game builds on the ideas of American Exceptionalism in the early 20th Century and is set in 1912. This period was marked by a belief in the unique character and destiny of the United States, which is reflected in the game’s setting and narrative. The floating city of Columbia, where the game takes place, is a marvel of engineering and a symbol of American ingenuity and ambition. However, beneath its utopian facade lies a society fraught with political and social turmoil.
Plot and Characters
The game’s main protagonist, former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt, is sent to the floating air-city of Columbia to seek out a young woman named Elizabeth, who has been held captive there for the last twelve years. Elizabeth is not just any ordinary captive; she possesses extraordinary powers that make her a key figure in the unfolding events. As Booker and Elizabeth navigate the dangerous streets of Columbia, they encounter various factions vying for control of the city, each with its own vision of what Columbia should be.
Ken Levine, creative director and head writer for the BioShock Infinite game, explains:
“After BioShock, we had a vision for a follow-up that dwarfed the original in scope and ambition,” – “BioShock Infinite has been our sole focus for the last four years, and we can’t wait for fans to get their hands on it.”
The relationship between Booker and Elizabeth is central to the game’s narrative. Unlike many other games where the companion character is a burden, Elizabeth is designed to be a valuable ally. She can assist in combat, provide useful items, and even manipulate the environment to help Booker. This dynamic adds a layer of strategy and depth to the gameplay, making each encounter unique and engaging.
Gameplay and Features
BioShock Infinite introduces several new gameplay mechanics that set it apart from its predecessors. One of the most notable features is the Sky-Line system, a network of railways that crisscross the city. Players can use a grappling hook to latch onto these rails and zip around the city, adding a vertical dimension to the combat and exploration. This system allows for fast-paced, dynamic battles that can take place across multiple levels and locations.
The game also features a wide array of weapons and abilities, known as Vigors, which grant the player supernatural powers. These abilities can be combined in creative ways to tackle different challenges and enemies. For example, players can use the “Murder of Crows” Vigor to summon a flock of crows that distract enemies, then follow up with a powerful melee attack.
In addition to its innovative gameplay, BioShock Infinite boasts stunning visuals and a richly detailed world. The art direction draws inspiration from turn-of-the-century architecture and design, creating a visually striking environment that feels both familiar and fantastical. The game’s sound design and musical score further enhance the immersive experience, drawing players into the world of Columbia.
BioShock Infinite promises to be a groundbreaking addition to the BioShock series, offering a compelling narrative, innovative gameplay, and a richly detailed world. Fans of the series and newcomers alike have much to look forward to when the game launches this October.
