Adafruit has added a new product to its range this week in the form of the ST-Link Programmer and Emulator, Debugging dongle, that contains firmware that can be easily updated when required as well as a couple pieces of female-female jumpers.
The new programmers and emulator is priced at just $12.50 and allows you to explore new micro-controller worlds. The dongle is equipped with a micro-controller together with the code for ST’s classic programmer and emulator for STM8 and STM32 bit processors. This makes it an invaluable tool for developers and hobbyists who are working with these specific micro-controllers.
Features and Benefits
One of the standout features of the ST-Link Programmer and Emulator is its ease of use. Adafruit explains:
“Comes with one USB stick and a couple pieces of female-female jumpers. You may want to peruse our jumper selection if you need more or different sizes. We wired it up to an ST32F205 and ran ST-Link, and worked great! You can even update the firmware on the dongle as necessary, it has a DFU bootloader (we unplugged/replugged it from USB to kick off the DFU process)”
This means that not only is the device ready to use out of the box, but it also offers flexibility for future updates. The DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) bootloader allows users to easily update the firmware by simply unplugging and replugging the device into the USB port. This feature ensures that the dongle remains compatible with future updates and improvements, making it a long-term investment for anyone working with STM8 and STM32 processors.
Practical Applications
The ST-Link Programmer and Emulator is particularly useful for debugging and programming STM8 and STM32 micro-controllers. These micro-controllers are widely used in various applications, from simple hobby projects to complex industrial systems. For instance, they can be found in automotive systems, consumer electronics, and even medical devices. The ability to easily program and debug these micro-controllers can significantly speed up development time and reduce the likelihood of errors.
Moreover, the inclusion of female-female jumpers adds to the versatility of the device. These jumpers can be used to connect the dongle to various other components, making it easier to integrate into different setups. Whether you’re working on a breadboard prototype or a more permanent installation, the ST-Link Programmer and Emulator can adapt to your needs.
