The BlackBerry Priv was released last year, the handset is BlackBerry’s first Android device and the company is also expected to release two new Android smartphones this year.
Earlier this month we heard a rumor that the company would be ditching their BlackBerry 10 OS in favor of Android, although the company confirmed that they were still committed to BB10.
Whilst the company confirmed that they were still committed to BB10, they did not reveal any information about future BB10 devices.
Now a senior director of product management for the Asia Pacific region, Damian Tay has confirmed that the company plans to use Android as their main platform in the future.
“The PRIV device is essentially our transition to Android ecosystem. As we secure Android, over a period of time, we would not have two platforms, and may have only Android as a platform [for smartphones],”
He also went on to say that the company plans to switch over to Android devices but will continue to sell existing BB10 devices to governments and authorities, although in the long term they plan to switch these customers to Android devices.
We are looking forward to seeing what new Android smartphones the company has planned for this year, as soon as we get some more details, we will let you guys know.
