Automattic the company that is responsible for developing and managing the millions of WordPress websites around the world has today announced the acquisition of the most popular e-commerce WordPress plug-in, WooCommerce.
WooCommerce is currently the most popular e-commerce plug-in for the WordPress platform and since its launch has seen roughly 7.5 million downloads, as well as being one of the top 10 most popular WordPress plug-ins.
WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg explained more about the acquisition of WooCommerce.
“I remember a few years ago I was at [a WordPress conference],”-“Someone stood up in the Q&A and asked me ‘When are you going to make it as easy to publish stores online as you’ve made it to publish websites?’… and there was spontaneous applause from the audience. People loved this idea.”
The acquisition of WooCommerce by WordPress is expected to be close within the next month and Follows on from the purchase of the WordPress security plug-in BruteProtect.
