A few hours back, we share a leaked photo of the much anticipated Budget iPhone that has markings from FCC and other assorted certifications. This suggests that it will not be long before the device will be announced as it’s the last step. Now, we have another rumor pointing towards the possible launch date of the Budget iPhone with some information about its pricing and Apple’s future plans. It is expected that the next generation iPhone as well as the low cost iPhone will be unveiled on September 18. Interestingly, the report also mentions that the much hyper iPhone Lite will actually be a refereshed iPhone 5 with plastic shells in places to reduce its cost.
The main purpose of releasing the refreshed or cheap iPhone is to compete in the mid-range market that is dominated by Android handsets. This means that rather than adding a new handset to the roster, Apple will upgrade iPhone 5 and discontinue iPhone 4. This will leave us with three Apple devices in the market: iPhone 4S, refreshed iPhone (budget iPhone) and the new iPhone.
In terms of pricing, it is expected that the low cost iPhone will be available for sale for $99 with a 2 year contract. On the other hand, the 16GB unlocked version will be available for $349. The refreshed iPhone aka Budget iPhone and the new iPhone will be released on 18 September and will be available for sale on 27 September.
If this is the price of the Budget iPhone, I think it has a pretty good chance to compete in the already dominated market. Plus, I think that the dates might be correct since the device has passed FCC and we have been hearing a lot of rumors about the launch date being sometime in September.
