Jeffrey Stephenson is well known for creating custom PCs using wood. However, this time Jeffrey’s latest creation is a little different. In addition to using a range of wood, he has also incorporated acrylic to create the Mondrian, a mini fanless PC inspired by the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian.
Design and Materials
The Mondrian was meticulously crafted using birch plywood, basswood, and colored hand-cut acrylic tiles. This combination of materials not only pays homage to Mondrian’s iconic style but also ensures durability and aesthetic appeal. The use of acrylic tiles adds a vibrant touch, making the PC a piece of art in itself. The fanless mini-ITX design is particularly noteworthy as it emphasizes silent operation, which is a significant advantage for users who prefer a quiet computing environment. Have a look at the photos below to appreciate the intricate design and craftsmanship.
The case features an exposed heatsink on one side, which is not just a functional component but also adds to the visual appeal of the PC. The heatsink is designed to efficiently dissipate heat, ensuring that the system remains cool even during intensive tasks. Additionally, it has an 80mm CPU fan attached to the other side of the heatsink. This fan is ingeniously designed to act as both a CPU and case fan, providing optimal cooling for the entire system.
Technical Specifications
The Mondrian is powered by an Intel Core i3-2105 processor, which offers a good balance of performance and energy efficiency. This processor is well-suited for everyday computing tasks such as web browsing, office applications, and media consumption. The system also features Intel HD graphics, which are capable of handling light gaming and high-definition video playback.
In terms of storage, the Mondrian is equipped with a 256GB SSD. This solid-state drive ensures fast boot times and quick access to files and applications, significantly enhancing the overall user experience. The PC also boasts 8GB of RAM, which is ample for multitasking and running multiple applications simultaneously without any lag.
Powering the Mondrian is a 120w picoPSU, a compact and efficient power supply unit that is ideal for small form factor PCs. This PSU ensures that the system receives a stable and reliable power supply, contributing to its overall performance and longevity.
For the operating system, Jeffrey has installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview. This version of Windows offers a modern interface and a range of new features designed to improve productivity and user experience. It is a fitting choice for a custom-built PC that combines aesthetics with functionality.
