One company, CTA Digital, has decided that the iPhone needs an accessory for racing games and has launched a new steering wheel accessory for the iPhone or iPod Touch.
Personally, I think this is a little over the top and hardly makes your iPhone very portable. Mind you, it certainly would be fun using this iPhone racing wheel on the plane next time I go on holidays. Check out the video of it in action below.
Features and Compatibility
The iPhone racing wheel features a suction cup on the bottom so you can stick it to your desk or a table. This design ensures that the wheel remains stable during intense gaming sessions, providing a more immersive experience. It comes with a bunch of adapters that make it compatible with the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G & 3GS, as well as the iPod Touch and iPod Touch 2G. This wide range of compatibility means that even older devices can benefit from this innovative accessory.
The wheel itself is designed to mimic the feel of a real steering wheel, complete with a comfortable grip and responsive turning. This can significantly enhance the realism of racing games, making you feel like you’re actually behind the wheel of a car. The accessory also includes buttons that can be mapped to various in-game functions, adding another layer of control and customization.
Practicality and Use Cases
While the idea of a steering wheel for your iPhone might seem impractical at first, there are several scenarios where it could be quite useful. For instance, if you’re a frequent traveler, this accessory could make long flights or train rides more enjoyable. Imagine being able to play your favorite racing games with a steering wheel while you’re on the go. It could also be a hit at social gatherings, where friends can take turns racing against each other.
However, it’s worth noting that the steering wheel does add some bulk to your device, making it less portable. This might not be an issue if you’re using it at home or in a stationary setting, but it’s something to consider if you plan on taking it with you frequently. Despite this, the added bulk is a small price to pay for the enhanced gaming experience it offers.
Another potential use case is for educational purposes. Driving simulators are often used in driver education programs to teach new drivers the basics of vehicle control. While this accessory is not a full-fledged simulator, it could serve as a fun and engaging way to introduce young people to the concepts of steering and vehicle dynamics.
There is no word on pricing or availability as yet, but given the unique nature of this accessory, it will likely attract a lot of interest from both casual gamers and racing enthusiasts alike. Keep an eye on the product page for updates.
