Google has today announced via a post on the Google+ community board that they have started rolling out the ability to create custom Google+ URLs.
Initially, Google is only rolling out the new feature to a “limited set of verified profiles” but will be expanding the user base over time, to more brands and individuals.
The new feature allows you to add a name at the end of google.com/+ such as google.com/+davidbeckham. Google explains a little more about the custom URL naming process:
“A custom URL is a short, easy to remember web address that links directly to your profile or page on Google+. For instance, +TOYOTA can now use google.com/+toyota to unveil their latest models, +Britney Spears can share her upcoming appearances at google.com/+britneyspears, +Ubisoft can share game trailers and videos at google.com/+assassinscreed, and +Delta can help travellers find great deals at google.com/+delta.”
Benefits of Custom Google+ URLs
Custom URLs offer several advantages for both individuals and brands. Firstly, they make it easier for users to remember and share links to their Google+ profiles. Instead of a long string of numbers, a custom URL provides a clean, professional appearance. This is particularly beneficial for brands looking to maintain a consistent online presence. For example, a company like +TOYOTA can use their custom URL in marketing materials, making it easier for customers to find them online.
Moreover, custom URLs can enhance search engine optimization (SEO). A URL that includes a brand name or relevant keywords can improve search engine rankings, making it easier for people to find the profile through search engines like Google. This can lead to increased visibility and engagement on the platform.
How to Get a Custom Google+ URL
While the feature is initially available to a limited set of verified profiles, Google plans to roll it out to more users over time. To be eligible for a custom URL, your Google+ account must meet certain criteria. Typically, this includes having a profile photo, at least 10 followers, and an account that is at least 30 days old. Verified accounts, such as those belonging to celebrities or well-known brands, are given priority.
Once eligible, users will receive a notification from Google+ with instructions on how to claim their custom URL. The process is straightforward: simply follow the link provided in the notification, review the suggested URL, and confirm your choice. In some cases, you may be given the option to request a different URL if the suggested one does not meet your preferences.

The introduction of custom Google+ URLs is a significant step forward for the platform. It not only enhances user experience by making profiles easier to find and share but also offers SEO benefits that can help increase visibility. As Google continues to roll out this feature to more users, it will be interesting to see how it impacts the way individuals and brands interact on Google+.
