Google has added another method for users to filter and sort their never-ending and growing inbox emails within Gmail this week with the addition of a new feature called Smart Labels.
Smart Labels is now available within the Gmail Labs section of your Gmail account and once enabled will sift through your inbox, labeling your incoming mail into categories such as email from forums, mailing list updates, or anything else you might be subscribed to and sorts them for you automatically.
How Smart Labels Work
The idea behind the new Smart Labels feature is that it will work for you straight away without any setup or learning how to use the new system. It works in conjunction with the Priority Inbox features added to Gmail last year. Smart Labels also now allows you to add more than one label to an email, allowing for easier reference in the future, rather than using folders that only allow you to assign one reference to an email.
For instance, if you receive an email from a forum you are subscribed to, Smart Labels will automatically categorize it under the “Forums” label. Similarly, newsletters and promotional emails will be sorted under “Promotions,” and updates from your subscriptions will be labeled as “Updates.” This automatic sorting helps keep your inbox organized and clutter-free, making it easier to find important emails without wading through a sea of less critical messages.
Benefits of Using Smart Labels
One of the primary benefits of using Smart Labels is the time-saving aspect. With the increasing volume of emails that most users receive daily, manually sorting through each email can be a daunting task. Smart Labels take this burden off your shoulders by automatically categorizing your emails as they arrive. This means you can spend less time managing your inbox and more time focusing on the emails that matter most.
Another advantage is the enhanced searchability of your emails. By having multiple labels assigned to a single email, you can easily locate it using any of the associated labels. For example, an email from a forum that also contains a promotional offer can be found under both “Forums” and “Promotions” labels. This multi-label system provides a more flexible and efficient way to manage your emails compared to traditional folder-based systems.
Moreover, Smart Labels can be customized to suit your specific needs. While the default labels provided by Gmail cover a broad range of categories, you can create your own labels to further refine your email organization. This customization ensures that your inbox management system is tailored to your unique requirements, making it even more effective.
