It seems that Apple is about to come under more scrutiny from US regulators, we recently told you that the FTC were looking into Apple’s new subscription rules for iOS apps and now it seems that they may be looking into in app purchases.
There was a rumor earlier this month that the FTC would investigate in app purchases in iOS apps, and now the FTC has confirmed that they will be investigating in app purchases after receiving complaints.
US legislator Rep. Ed Markey sent a letter to the FTC, about his concerns on in app purchases, and FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz responded with the following statement.
“We fully share your concern that consumers, particularly children, are unlikely to understand the ramifications of these types of purchases,”
Apple needs to address this problem with in app purchases, where children are spending large amounts of money purchasing in app items without their parents knowledge.
Whilst Apple has parental controls in place to try and stop this sort of thing, it obviously isn’t enoughto make sure that large amounts of money are being spent on in app purchases by children without their parents consent.
