We previously saw a teardown of the new iPhones from iFixit and now it is the turn of the new Apple Watch 4.
The new Apple Watch Series 4 has had a range of upgrades over the previous model, this includes a new larger display and more.
The watch comes in two sizes 40mm and 42mm like the previous model, both displays are larger than the previous watch. The new Apple Watch 4 is powered by a new dual core Apple S4 SiP and it comes in a choice of GPS or GPS and LTE.
Enhanced Display and Design
One of the most notable upgrades in the Apple Watch Series 4 is its enhanced display. The screen is over 30% larger than its predecessor, providing users with more screen real estate to interact with. This larger display is achieved by reducing the bezels, allowing for a more immersive experience. The corners of the display are now rounded, matching the contours of the watch itself, which not only looks aesthetically pleasing but also makes the interface more user-friendly.
The design of the Apple Watch 4 has also been refined. It is slightly thinner than the Series 3, making it more comfortable to wear. The back of the watch is now made entirely of black ceramic and sapphire crystal, which not only improves cellular reception but also gives the watch a more premium feel.
Advanced Health Features
The Apple Watch Series 4 is not just about looks; it also comes packed with advanced health features. One of the standout features is the new electrical heart sensor, which allows users to take an electrocardiogram (ECG) directly from their wrist. This feature has been cleared by the FDA and can help detect irregular heart rhythms, providing users with potentially life-saving information.
Additionally, the watch includes a new fall detection feature. Using its advanced accelerometer and gyroscope, the Apple Watch 4 can detect if the wearer has taken a hard fall. If the watch senses that the user is immobile for more than a minute after the fall, it will automatically call emergency services and send a message to emergency contacts.
The guys from iFixit score devices on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 means that the device is easy to repair for the average person and 1 means it is difficult to repair. The Apple Watch 4 scored 6 out of 10, this means that the device is easier to repair than some Apple devices.
The teardown revealed that while the Apple Watch 4 is more repairable than some other Apple products, it still poses challenges. For instance, the display and battery are relatively easy to replace, which is good news for those who might need to perform these common repairs. However, other components, such as the Taptic Engine and the S4 chip, are more difficult to access and replace.
The teardown also highlighted the meticulous engineering that goes into the Apple Watch 4. The internal components are tightly packed, and the use of adhesives makes disassembly more challenging. Despite these challenges, the watch’s modular design for some components, like the display and battery, contributes to its higher repairability score.
The Apple Watch Series 4 represents a significant upgrade over its predecessor, with a larger display, refined design, and advanced health features. While it is more repairable than some other Apple devices, it still requires a certain level of skill to disassemble and repair. You can see the full teardown over at iFixit at the link below.
