The new Destiny game that was developed by Bungie and published by Activiaion might have cost a massive $500 million to design, make and market. But Activision has today announced that sales of the new Destiny game on the first day alone have covered the creation costs.
Activision today revealed that sales on the very first day of launch for the new Bungie created Destiny game, generated more than $500 million in revenue worldwide.
To be clear the Activision says that the sales figures indicate what the publisher has sold to game shops and third parties such as Sony and Microsoft, and not to retail customers.
As yet Activision Blizzard has not revealed how many copies of the new Destiny game have been sold worldwide to consumers as yet, but early signs indicate that the new franchise is set to become the company’s next multi-billion-dollar game. Activision Blizzard boss Bobby Kotick explained in an interview :
“Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny,” “This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world.
The success of Destiny, along with the recent introduction of Blizzard Entertainment’s Hearthstone, is further validation of our unique capabilities to create great entertainment franchises from the ground up.”
Destiny launched at over 11,000 midnight openings around the world on its launch day and it will be interesting to see over the next couple of weeks, as full reviews of the full game are published, as to whether the game has the staying power required.
