On the weekend, Amazon announced their new delivery system, which will deliver your Amazon orders by remote-controlled drones in the future.
Now, UK book retailer Waterstones has decided that they have an even better way of delivering your books. They have introduced a new system called OWLS, or Ornithological Waterstones Landing Service, as the company calls it. Have a look at the video below.
O.W.L.S. consists of a fleet of specially trained owls that, either working individually or as an adorable team, will be able to deliver your package within thirty minutes of you placing your order.
Waterstones also pointed out that it could take them a few years to train the owls to deliver your parcels, so I guess we will just have to make do with the regular mail for now, or you could order from Amazon and get it delivered by drone delivery when it is available.
The Concept Behind OWLS
The idea of using owls for delivery is not only innovative but also taps into the cultural fascination with these majestic birds. Owls have been symbols of wisdom and mystery in various cultures, making them an intriguing choice for a delivery service. The concept of OWLS is designed to capture the imagination of customers, offering a whimsical and enchanting alternative to modern technology-driven solutions like drones.
Training these owls to deliver packages is no small feat. It involves a rigorous training program where the owls are taught to recognize addresses, navigate urban environments, and safely deliver packages to customers. This training process is expected to take several years, during which the owls will undergo various stages of learning and adaptation.
Comparing OWLS to Drone Delivery
While Amazon’s drone delivery system promises speed and efficiency, the OWLS system offers a unique and charming experience. Drones are powered by advanced technology, GPS navigation, and automated systems, ensuring quick and precise deliveries. However, they lack the personal touch and the element of surprise that comes with an owl delivering your package.
On the other hand, OWLS brings a sense of nostalgia and wonder. Imagine receiving your favorite book delivered by a beautiful owl, reminiscent of the magical world of Harry Potter. This experience could create a memorable moment for customers, making them more likely to choose Waterstones for their book purchases.
Moreover, the OWLS system aligns with eco-friendly practices. Owls are natural creatures that do not require fuel or electricity to operate, making them a sustainable alternative to drones. This could appeal to environmentally conscious consumers who are looking for greener options in their shopping habits.
Waterstones has also posted a funny FAQ on their new OWLS delivery system over at the Waterstones blog. The FAQ addresses various humorous questions about the logistics and feasibility of using owls for delivery, adding to the charm and appeal of the concept. Head on over there at the link below and check it out.
