VW has made a strange announcement that it’s motorsports division will stop developing piston engine-powered racing cars and start working on electric racing cars. This means no more hotted up racing cars like the Golf GTI TCR, but new racing cars that use electricity are coming.
The Motorsport division will also end its involvement in factory-backed traditional gas-powering motor racing. VW Motorsport will keep making the Polo GTI R5 for customer teams in Germany and will continue making spare parts.
This means that the VW ID.R will be the flagship model racing car from the brand. The division is also set to develop a second brand pillar to bridge the gap between production cars and race cars.
