The Pikes Peak hill climb that is held each year is a big deal in automotive circles, and manufacturers from all over the world come to participate. VW was there this year with its slick I.D. R that set a lap record for EVs at the event. VW now wants that electric race car to take on other lap records.
VW Motorsport is planning to take on the electric lap record at the Nurburgring with the I.D. R prototype racer it used at the hill climb. Not only is the racer expected to take that EV record, but simulations also suggest that the EV could take the overall record for the track.
Word is VW has the track reserved for private testing next May, and that is when the record attempt will go down. Right now Porsche holds the outright record with a highly modified 919 Hybrid Evo racing car. The Nio EP9 currently holds the EV record with a time of 6 minutes 45.90 seconds compared to the overall record of 5 minutes and 19.55 seconds for the Porsche 919. VW says the sims are showing a time below 5 minutes and 30 seconds.
