If you are, anything like me remembering to take out the trash might be a problem for you. Automaker Volvo has a cool new project that is designed to create drones that can take the trash out for you. It’s called the ROAR project standing for RObot-based Autonomous Refuse handling and it is a collaboration with Volvo and Renova.
Renova is a Swedish waste and recycling company. The goal of the project is to create an automated system for getting garbage out of the cans and into the trash truck. The trash truck used in the new system is a modified standard truck with a small platform on the back. The ROARY land drone sits on that tray and picks up the can, dumps it into the truck, and returns the can to the drive.
On the roof of the land drone is a flying quadrotor drone that has GPS, LIDAR, and other sensors to find the target and avoid obstacles. This helps the land drone get to and from the trashcans without issues. The system eliminates the need for a person to be on the outside of the truck to supervise the process.
