The BBC has sponsored inventor and maker extraordinaire Colin Furze to create a new ride for Stig that will be featured for the next series of Top Gear.
As always, Colin has been thinking out of the box and combined a dodgem car with a motorbike engine, creating a powerful bumper car that Stig is sure to enjoy driving. This unique creation is not just a simple modification but a testament to Colin’s ingenuity and engineering prowess.
The Build Process
Colin Furze is known for his elaborate and often eccentric inventions, and this project is no exception. The build process involves intricate engineering and creative problem-solving. The first part of the build showcased Colin stripping down a traditional dodgem car and fitting it with a high-powered motorbike engine. This transformation required significant modifications to the chassis and suspension to handle the increased power and speed.
Check out the second part of the build process, which will be unveiled in its entirety at the end of this month on March 30th, 2017. In case you missed the first one, I have also embedded this below.
Challenges and Innovations
Building a high-speed dodgem car comes with its own set of challenges. One of the primary concerns is safety. Traditional dodgem cars are designed for low-speed collisions in amusement parks, not for high-speed racing. Colin had to reinforce the frame and add safety features to ensure that the vehicle could handle the rigors of high-speed driving.
Another challenge was integrating the motorbike engine into the dodgem car’s compact frame. This required custom mounts and a reconfigured drivetrain to ensure that the power could be effectively transferred to the wheels. Colin also had to consider the cooling system, as the high-performance engine generates significantly more heat than the original dodgem car’s setup.
Part 2 of my challenge to build The Stig from Top Gear a new ride, in this video I finish off the mechanical base so all we need is a paint job then it’s time to have a blast……….and maybe set a record? This is a sponsored project by BBC Worldwide
The final touches include a custom paint job and possibly setting a new speed record for dodgem cars. Colin’s attention to detail and commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible make this project particularly exciting.
Anticipation and Impact
Fans of both Colin Furze and Top Gear are eagerly anticipating the unveiling of this unique vehicle. The collaboration between Colin and the BBC highlights the innovative spirit that both parties bring to their respective fields. This project not only showcases Colin’s skills but also adds a new and exciting element to the upcoming series of Top Gear.
The impact of this project extends beyond just entertainment. It serves as an inspiration for aspiring inventors and engineers, demonstrating that with creativity and determination, even the most unconventional ideas can be brought to life. Colin’s work often blurs the line between art and engineering, and this project is a perfect example of that.
