Modder Tyler had a couple of old Linksys routers lying around, and he decided he wanted to make use of them. So, what did he do? Tyler managed to put an entire MacBook inside the body of two joined Linksys routers. This unique and creative project showcases the ingenuity and resourcefulness of tech enthusiasts who love to repurpose old hardware.
Everything from inside the MacBook has been meticulously transplanted into the routers, which even includes the i-Sight web camera and microphone. We have no idea why he did it, but it is still pretty cool. This kind of modding project not only breathes new life into outdated technology but also serves as an inspiration for others looking to embark on similar ventures.
The Process Behind the Mod
The process of creating this mod was not a simple one. Tyler had to carefully disassemble the MacBook and figure out how to fit all its components into the limited space provided by the Linksys router cases. This required a lot of planning, precision, and patience. The internal layout had to be reconfigured to ensure that everything would fit snugly without causing any damage to the components.
Tyler’s dedication to the project is evident in his attention to detail. He even managed to include the MacBook’s i-Sight web camera and microphone, which are not typically considered essential components for such a mod. This attention to detail highlights Tyler’s commitment to creating a fully functional and aesthetically pleasing final product.
My alter ego and I always came back to one simple, yet amazing concept. Some of the possible ideas included: mounting the finished product like a Billy the Big Mouth Bass, trophy case style. Another idea was to simply finish the plastic enclosure and have a plain, run-of-the-mill, boring see-through case. I also pondered mounting it on wood at one point, but it never really stuck. Our back-and-forth banter (discussions) always came back to enclosing it in an old Linksys router case, and so that is how this mod was finally finished. After a year of talking and discussing, it is finished and in working order.
Why Modding Matters
Modding projects like Tyler’s Linksys MacBook Mod are important for several reasons. First, they demonstrate the potential for repurposing old technology, reducing electronic waste, and promoting sustainability. By finding new uses for outdated devices, modders can help reduce the environmental impact of electronic waste.
Second, these projects foster creativity and innovation. Modders like Tyler push the boundaries of what is possible with existing technology, often coming up with unique and unexpected solutions. This kind of creative problem-solving can inspire others to think outside the box and explore new possibilities in their own projects.
Finally, modding projects can serve as valuable learning experiences. The process of disassembling and reassembling devices, troubleshooting issues, and finding solutions to complex problems can help modders develop a deeper understanding of how technology works. This hands-on experience can be invaluable for those looking to pursue careers in technology or engineering.
