To help tackle the growing ocean waste crisis, the team at Parkville, an eco-friendly and sustainable principal company based in London, has taken to Kickstarter to launch their new range of FlipYarn sunglasses and accessories made from upcycled flip-flops. Watch the demonstration video below to learn more about the range of sunglasses created from ocean waste to provide a more environmentally friendly and sustainable product.
Early bird pledges are available from just £4 for an upcycled flip-flop bracelet or £30 for polarized environmentally friendly sunglasses. With a range of different lenses to choose from, including mirrored, dark grey, and orange mirror.
The Problem of Ocean Waste
Ocean waste is a significant environmental issue, with millions of tons of plastic and other debris polluting our oceans every year. This waste not only harms marine life but also affects human health and the overall ecosystem. Discarded flip-flops are a major contributor to this problem, often ending up on beaches and in waterways. These flip-flops can take hundreds of years to decompose, during which time they can cause significant damage to marine habitats.
Innovative Upcycling Solutions
Parkville’s FlipYarn project aims to address this issue by collecting discarded flip-flops and transforming them into stylish and functional products. The process begins with the collection of flip-flops from waterways, beach clean-ups, and designated collection points. These flip-flops are then sorted at waste sorting facilities in Sri Lanka, where Parkville is based.
The collected flip-flops are cleaned and processed to create a durable material that can be used to manufacture sunglasses and accessories. This innovative approach not only helps to reduce ocean waste but also provides a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic products.
“Thanks for checking out FlipYarn – We are very proud and excited to announce our flip-flop waste collection and upcycling program where we collect discarded flip-flops and turn them into fun and innovative FlipYarn products! We collect these flip-flops from waterways, beach clean-ups as well as designated collection points and sorted at waste sorting facilities here in Sri Lanka where we are based.”
Supporting the Cause
By supporting the FlipYarn project on Kickstarter, backers can contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment. Early bird pledges start at just £4 for an upcycled flip-flop bracelet, making it an affordable way to support the cause. For those looking for a more substantial contribution, polarized environmentally friendly sunglasses are available for £30. These sunglasses come with a variety of lens options, including mirrored, dark grey, and orange mirror, allowing backers to choose a style that suits their preferences.
In addition to helping reduce ocean waste, the FlipYarn project also supports local communities in Sri Lanka by providing employment opportunities in the waste collection and sorting process. This not only helps to improve the local economy but also raises awareness about the importance of environmental sustainability.
