A report on the DigiTimes website has revealed that Sony is hoping to ship 16 million PlayStation 4 consoles in 2013, with Sony’s PlayStation 4 production line to start mass shipments in August 2013.
The news of the PlayStation 4 shipment goals has been reported by a source close to component makers of the new Sony PlayStation 4 console, but as yet nothing has been confirmed by Sony.
16 million PlayStation 4 consoles seems a huge amount for Sony to ship this year and may, refer to their financial year which end next spring :
“The sources pointed out that the PS4 will be manufactured by Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) and Pegatron Technology, and the player have just begun the processes of request for quotation (RFQ) for the related components. Therefore, the component shipments are unlikely to start until August, but should allow the machine to show up before the year-end holidays in 2013.”
Manufacturing and Supply Chain
The manufacturing of the PlayStation 4 by Foxconn Electronics and Pegatron Technology is a significant move. Foxconn, known for its large-scale manufacturing capabilities, has been a key player in the production of various high-profile electronics, including Apple’s iPhone. Pegatron, another major player in the electronics manufacturing industry, has also been involved in producing devices for companies like Microsoft and Asus. The involvement of these two giants in the production of the PlayStation 4 ensures that Sony can meet its ambitious shipment goals.
The process of request for quotation (RFQ) for the related components is a critical step in the manufacturing process. This involves suppliers providing detailed quotes for the components required to build the PlayStation 4. Once the RFQs are received and evaluated, Sony can finalize its supply chain and begin mass production. The timing of these shipments is crucial, as it aligns with the year-end holiday season, a peak period for console sales.
Market Expectations and Competition
The goal of shipping 16 million PlayStation 4 consoles in 2013 reflects Sony’s confidence in the market demand for its new console. The PlayStation 4, with its advanced hardware and innovative features, is expected to attract a large number of gamers. The console’s powerful graphics, improved processing capabilities, and enhanced online features are designed to provide a superior gaming experience.
However, Sony’s ambitious shipment target also highlights the competitive nature of the gaming console market. The PlayStation 4 will be competing with Microsoft’s Xbox One, which is also set to launch around the same time. Both consoles are expected to offer similar features, including high-definition graphics, online multiplayer capabilities, and a wide range of games. The competition between Sony and Microsoft will be intense, with both companies vying for market share.
In addition to competing with Microsoft, Sony will also face challenges from other gaming platforms, such as PC gaming and mobile gaming. The rise of mobile gaming, in particular, has changed the landscape of the gaming industry. With the increasing popularity of smartphones and tablets, more people are playing games on these devices. Sony will need to ensure that the PlayStation 4 offers a unique and compelling gaming experience to attract gamers away from these alternative platforms.
As more information about the PlayStation 4 comes to light we will keep you posted.
