It looks like Samsung and AT&T are getting ready to launch a rugged version of the Galaxy S8, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active.
The Galaxy Active smartphones have been exclusive to AT&T in the past and it looks like the new Galaxy S8 Active will also be an AT&T exclusive.
Enhanced Durability and Rugged Features
The handset will be water proof, dust proof and more rugged than the current S8, and it is expected to come with an IP68 certification. This means that the Galaxy S8 Active will be able to withstand submersion in water up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes and will be completely protected against dust ingress. This makes it an ideal choice for users who need a phone that can handle tough environments, whether it’s for outdoor adventures or demanding work conditions.
In addition to the IP68 rating, the Galaxy S8 Active is likely to feature a MIL-STD-810G certification, which is a U.S. military standard that indicates the device can endure a variety of environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, shock, and vibration. This rugged build ensures that the phone can survive drops and impacts that would typically damage a standard smartphone.
Expected Specifications and Features
As yet there are no details on what the exact specifications will be on the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active, although they are expected to be very similar to the Galaxy S8. The Galaxy S8 features a 5.8-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display, a powerful Exynos 8895 or Snapdragon 835 processor (depending on the region), 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal storage with microSD support for expansion.
The camera setup on the Galaxy S8 includes a 12-megapixel rear camera with Dual Pixel technology for fast autofocus and excellent low-light performance, and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies and video calls. It is likely that the Galaxy S8 Active will retain these camera specifications, ensuring high-quality photography and videography capabilities.
One area where the Galaxy S8 Active might differ from the standard S8 is the battery capacity. Rugged smartphones often come with larger batteries to ensure longer usage times in the field. Therefore, the S8 Active could feature a battery larger than the 3000mAh unit found in the regular S8, potentially offering extended battery life for users who are frequently away from charging points.
Another potential difference could be the design of the device. While the Galaxy S8 is known for its sleek, glass-backed design, the S8 Active is expected to have a more robust and grippy exterior, possibly with reinforced corners and a textured back to prevent slips and drops.
Software and Additional Features
On the software side, the Galaxy S8 Active will likely run on Samsung’s custom UI based on Android, providing a smooth and feature-rich user experience. This includes Samsung’s Bixby assistant, which offers voice control, contextual information, and smart reminders. Additionally, the phone will support Samsung DeX, allowing users to connect their phone to a monitor and use it as a desktop computer.
Given the rugged nature of the device, it may also come with additional software features tailored for outdoor and industrial use. This could include specialized apps for navigation, weather monitoring, and fitness tracking, making it a versatile tool for a variety of activities.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 Active is shaping up to be a formidable addition to Samsung’s lineup, offering enhanced durability and rugged features while maintaining the high performance and advanced capabilities of the Galaxy S8. With its expected IP68 and MIL-STD-810G certifications, larger battery, and robust design, it will be an excellent choice for users who need a smartphone that can withstand the rigors of their active lifestyles.
