The Samsung Focus 2 was announced earlier this month, and the handset is now available from US mobile carrier AT&T for $49.99 when you sign up to a new two-year contract with the carrier.
The Focus 2 comes with a 4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen display that features a resolution of 800 x 400 pixels. Processing is provided by a single-core 1.4GHz processor, and it runs on Windows Phone 7.5 Mango.
The Samsung Focus 2 also comes with 8GB of built-in storage, plus a 5-megapixel camera which is capable of recording HD video in 720p. There is also a front-facing VGA camera for video chat.
Display and Design
The 4-inch Super AMOLED display on the Samsung Focus 2 ensures vibrant colors and deep blacks, making it ideal for media consumption and gaming. The 800 x 400 pixel resolution, while not the highest on the market, provides a clear and sharp viewing experience for everyday tasks. The compact size of the device makes it easy to handle and operate with one hand, which is a significant advantage for users who prefer smaller phones.
The design of the Focus 2 is sleek and modern, with smooth curves and a glossy finish that gives it a premium look. Despite its budget-friendly price, the build quality does not feel cheap, and the phone is comfortable to hold for extended periods.
Performance and Software
Under the hood, the Samsung Focus 2 is powered by a single-core 1.4GHz processor. While this may seem modest compared to today’s multi-core processors, it is sufficient for running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango smoothly. The operating system is known for its fluid performance and user-friendly interface, making it a good choice for those new to smartphones or looking for a straightforward experience.
Windows Phone 7.5 Mango offers a range of features, including Live Tiles, which provide real-time updates on the home screen, and integration with Microsoft services like Office and SkyDrive. The OS also supports multitasking, allowing users to switch between apps seamlessly.
Camera and Multimedia
The 5-megapixel rear camera on the Samsung Focus 2 is capable of capturing decent photos and recording HD video in 720p. While it may not compete with the high-end cameras found on flagship devices, it is more than adequate for casual photography and video recording. The camera app is easy to use, with various settings and modes to help users get the best shot possible.
The front-facing VGA camera is suitable for video chats and selfies, though the quality is not as high as more recent front-facing cameras. It is, however, a useful feature for staying connected with friends and family through video calls.
Storage and Connectivity
With 8GB of built-in storage, the Samsung Focus 2 provides enough space for essential apps, photos, and music. However, users who require more storage may find this limiting, as there is no option for expandable storage via a microSD card. Cloud storage services like SkyDrive can help mitigate this limitation by allowing users to store files online.
In terms of connectivity, the Focus 2 supports 4G LTE, providing fast internet speeds for browsing, streaming, and downloading. Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS, ensuring that users can stay connected and navigate with ease.
