Last week we heard that Google would be releasing the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for their Nexus S smartphone. On Friday and over the weekend, Google started rolling out Jelly Bean as an OTA (Over-The-Air) update for the Nexus S.
The update should be available for your Nexus S now. If you haven’t received it, you can check if it is available by going to the settings menu on your device. Simply navigate to Settings > About phone > System updates to see if the update is ready for download.
We’ve started rolling out Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, to Nexus S phones on a number of carriers including T-Mobile, H3G, O2, Rogers as well as Vodafone in most countries, with more to come. Enjoy!
New Features in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
Android 4.1 Jelly Bean brings a host of new features and improvements to the Nexus S. One of the most notable enhancements is Project Butter, which makes the user interface (UI) smoother and more responsive. This is achieved through triple buffering in the graphics pipeline, which ensures that the device runs at a consistent frame rate of 60 frames per second.
Another significant addition is Google Now, a smart assistant that provides real-time information based on your search history, location, and calendar events. Google Now can show you the weather, traffic updates, and even the score of your favorite sports team, all without you having to ask.
The notification system has also been revamped. Notifications are now more interactive, allowing you to take actions directly from the notification shade. For example, you can reply to a message or share a photo without opening the respective app.
How to Prepare for the Update
Before you update your Nexus S to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, there are a few steps you should take to ensure a smooth transition. First, make sure your device is fully charged or connected to a power source. An interrupted update due to a drained battery can cause issues.
Next, back up your important data. While the update process is designed to preserve your data, it’s always a good idea to have a backup just in case something goes wrong. You can use Google’s built-in backup service or third-party apps to save your contacts, photos, and other essential files.
Finally, ensure that you have a stable Wi-Fi connection. The update file can be quite large, and downloading it over a cellular network may incur additional charges or take a long time.
If you have received the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for your Google Nexus S, leave a comment and let us know which mobile carrier you are with and also which country you are in. Your feedback can help other users know what to expect and when they might receive the update.
