On Monday, we heard a rumor that Apple is gearing up to launch the 2011 Mac Pro, and it could go on sale sometime in August. Now, more evidence has emerged pointing to a Mac Pro refresh.
According to the guys over at 9 To 5 Mac, whose source has reportedly seen some internal Apple documents relating to the Mac Pro refresh, Apple will be releasing a new Mac Pro with 16 cores.
Other models reported to be available, in addition to the 16-core Mac Pro, include a 6-core model, an 8-core model, and a 12-core model, which are similar to the existing models.
Performance Expectations
A 16-core Mac Pro sounds impressive and we suspect it is going to be capable of some serious performance. This kind of processing power is likely to appeal to professionals in fields such as video editing, 3D rendering, and scientific computing, where multi-core performance can significantly reduce the time required for complex tasks. For instance, video editors working with 4K or even 8K footage will find the additional cores beneficial for faster rendering times and smoother playback during editing.
The 6-core, 8-core, and 12-core models will also cater to a variety of professional needs, offering a range of performance levels to suit different budgets and requirements. These models will likely feature the latest Intel Xeon processors, known for their reliability and performance in demanding applications.
Potential Features and Pricing
In addition to the increased core count, the new Mac Pro models are expected to come with other hardware upgrades. These could include faster RAM options, more storage configurations, and improved graphics cards. The inclusion of Thunderbolt ports, USB-C, and possibly even 10Gb Ethernet could make these machines highly versatile for various professional workflows.
Given the high-end specifications, the 16-core Mac Pro will probably also have a fairly hefty price tag. Historically, Mac Pro models have been priced at a premium, reflecting their target market of professionals who require top-tier performance and are willing to pay for it. The 16-core model could easily surpass the $5,000 mark, especially when fully configured with additional RAM, storage, and upgraded graphics.
For those who don’t need quite as much power, the 6-core and 8-core models will likely offer a more affordable entry point into the Mac Pro lineup. These models will still provide excellent performance for tasks like software development, graphic design, and audio production, making them a versatile choice for a wide range of professional users.
As soon as we get more information on exactly when the new 2011 Apple Mac Pro will launch, we will let you guys know. The anticipation is building, and it will be interesting to see how these new models compare to the competition and how they are received by the professional community.
