Modder Jindra1403 has created a new graphics enhancement for the excellent Kingdom Come Deliverance PC version in the form of the Volumetric Fog Shadows Mod which is now available to download and install for the PC version of the game. Once installed, as the mod’s name suggests, it enhances the in-game fog to look more realistic and is compatible with KCD versions 1.9.X.
Features of the Volumetric Fog Shadows Mod
The Volumetric Fog Shadows Mod brings a significant visual upgrade to Kingdom Come Deliverance by improving the way fog interacts with light and shadows in the game. This mod doesn’t use the standard volumetric fog (e_VolumetricFog), which, while visually appealing, is uniformly spread across the entire map, including indoor areas, and remains constant regardless of weather conditions or time of day. Instead, this mod leverages the game’s existing fog system and enhances it by enabling its “volumetric” (deferred) shadows. This means that the fog shadows are only visible when it makes sense, such as during foggy weather when the sun casts shadows through the fog.
Jindra1403 explains, “This mod doesn’t use volumetric fog (e_VolumetricFog), which looks nice, but is unfortunately homogeneously spread over the whole map (in buildings as well) and is present in any weather and time of day, always in the same amount and colour. Instead, this mod works with the regular fog that the game normally uses and just turns on its ‘volumetric’ (deferred) shadows. The effect is therefore only visible when it makes sense, that is, when it’s foggy weather and sun casts shadows through the fog. If necessary, you can reduce the resolution of the fog shadows by changing the value of r_FogShadows in autoexec.cfg to ‘2’.”
