The guys over at Engadget got their hands on a review unit of the new iPhone 4, and one thing they noticed whilst doing the review is that the glass back panel can be scratched.
As you can see from the photo below, there are a couple of scratches on the iPhone 4 back panel. Apparently, these can only be seen in bright light.
This doesn’t sound too encouraging. Let’s hope this is a one-off and not something we are going to see regularly, especially considering Apple has sold over 600,000 iPhone 4’s before it has even gone on sale.
The Durability of the iPhone 4 Glass Back
The iPhone 4 glass on the back panel is supposed to be made of toughened glass, so you wouldn’t think it would scratch this easily. Apple has touted the durability of its glass, claiming it is made from aluminosilicate glass, which is chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic. This type of glass is also used in the windshields of helicopters and high-speed trains, which makes the scratching issue even more surprising.
However, real-world usage often tells a different story. While the glass may be tough, it is not invincible. Everyday items like keys, coins, and even certain types of sand can cause scratches. This is a significant concern for users who prefer to use their phones without a case to showcase the sleek design of the iPhone 4.
Preventing Scratches on Your iPhone 4
Given the potential for scratches, it’s essential to take preventive measures to keep your iPhone 4 looking pristine. Here are some tips to help you protect your device:
1. Use a Case: One of the simplest ways to protect your iPhone 4 is by using a case. There are numerous options available, ranging from slim, barely-there cases to more rugged, heavy-duty ones. A case can provide an additional layer of protection against scratches and drops.
2. Screen Protectors: While screen protectors are typically used for the front display, there are also protectors available for the back glass. These thin films can help prevent scratches without adding bulk to your phone.
3. Be Mindful of Where You Place Your Phone: Avoid placing your iPhone 4 in pockets or bags where it might come into contact with sharp objects like keys or coins. Designate a specific pocket or compartment for your phone to minimize the risk of scratches.
4. Regular Cleaning: Dust and dirt particles can cause micro-scratches on the glass surface. Regularly clean your iPhone 4 with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove any debris that could potentially scratch the glass.
5. Avoid Rough Surfaces: Be cautious about placing your iPhone 4 on rough or abrasive surfaces. Even a seemingly harmless surface like a wooden table can have particles that might scratch the glass.
While the scratching issue is a concern, it’s worth noting that the iPhone 4’s design and features have received widespread acclaim. The device boasts a high-resolution Retina display, a powerful A4 processor, and a sleek, modern design that has set a new standard for smartphones.
In conclusion, while the iPhone 4’s glass back panel is susceptible to scratches, there are several steps you can take to protect your device. By using a case, applying screen protectors, and being mindful of where you place your phone, you can help keep your iPhone 4 looking as good as new. Despite this minor drawback, the iPhone 4 remains a groundbreaking device that continues to impress users worldwide.
